Throughout my years as a business development coach for lawyers, I have encountered various challenges related to image issues that I have had to address before a plan for business development goes any further. Additionally, while serving as a member of my former firm’s leadership, I have addressed many concerns such as body odor, bad breath and completely inappropriate unkempt appearances. It’s crucial to approach matters such as body odor cautiously, considering potential links to mental health issues and involving the HR department for assistance. I won’t delve into the details of these extreme cases in the following discussion.
Amid the COVID era, numerous individuals found themselves neglecting personal image and grooming. For some, virtual meetings became a convenient excuse to let go of self-care. However, as many professionals, including lawyers, have either returned to the office or embraced a hybrid work environment, the need to attend to personal appearance has resurfaced. A U.S. law firm managing partner recently highlighted in an article that the post-COVID return has given rise to a trend of in messy attire and very poor grooming within his office and he is making efforts to change it.
Paying attention to personal image is crucial for a lawyer wanting to build a successful career. A professional and polished appearance can positively impact networking, work attraction, and overall career development. Here are a few reasons and areas of personal image to consider –
First impressions matter:
Clients, colleagues, and superiors often form opinions based on initial impressions. A well-groomed and professionally dressed lawyer is more likely to create a positive first impression, instilling confidence and trust in others. Some would argue it’s important not to make broad assumptions about a lawyer’s professional capabilities solely based on their physical tidiness. I don’t buy that argument.
Professionalism:
A lawyer’s appearance reflects their commitment to professionalism. Clients and colleagues are more likely to take someone seriously if they present themselves in a manner consistent with the expectations of the legal profession.
Building Trust:
Trust is a critical element in legal relationships. A well-groomed and appropriately dressed lawyer is more likely to gain the trust of clients. While gaining the trust of clients is a central aspect, a lawyer’s appearance extends beyond this by influencing communication, professional branding, ethical standards, client satisfaction, and overall career trajectory. It plays a multifaceted role in shaping perceptions and contributing to a lawyer’s success.
Confidence:
Confidence is the cornerstone of a compelling presence. It is imperative to exude assurance not only through articulate communication but also via confident body language. Upholding an upright posture and establishing meaningful eye contact are pivotal elements in projecting an aura of self-assuredness. These aspects not only convey your confidence to others but also contribute significantly to your overall professional image and impact.
Networking opportunities:
Engaging in social and networking events, as well as conducting one-on-one networking, plays a crucial role in constructing a strong professional network and establishing a successful practice. A young lawyer can improve their chances of opportunities by maintaining a favorable personal appearance.
Client Perception:
In the realm of legal services, clients gravitate toward professionals who not only possess expertise but also radiate an air of competence and reliability. A lawyer’s personal image stands as a powerful orchestrator in shaping the client’s perception of their capabilities and unwavering commitment. Beyond the legal acumen, it is the lawyer’s demeanor, appearance, and overall professional presentation that become integral components in fostering a profound sense of trust and confidence.
Career advancement:
A positive personal image contributes to a lawyer’s overall professional brand. This can enhance career advancement opportunities, as colleagues and superiors are more likely to consider someone who presents themselves well for promotions and leadership roles.
Competitive edge:
In a competitive legal landscape, where clients have choices among lawyers, appearance can serve as a differentiator. A well-groomed and appropriately dressed lawyer may stand out positively in comparison to others, providing a competitive edge in attracting clients and opportunities.
Versatility in professional settings:
Lawyers often engage in a variety of professional settings, from client meetings, talks and panels, networking events and for some, courtroom appearances. A lawyer who can adapt their appearance appropriately to different contexts demonstrates versatility and an understanding of the diverse aspects of their practice.

I do ‘Business Development’ coaching. Not life coaching. Not career coaching. The coaching is specifically tailored to business development in the legal profession. My focus is on helping lawyers build and retain client relationships, as well as winning new clients.
I have been a partner at two international firms and have dedicated the past 20 years to coaching individual lawyers in business development.
My clients range from lawyers in national and international law firms to those in regional, small office, and specialized boutique firms, as well as solo practitioners. Based in Toronto, I work with clients throughout Canada, having also worked in several other countries. I’m typically engaged either by individual lawyers or firms on a retainer basis to provide ongoing coaching for their lawyers at various stages of their careers, and in certain cases, to lead targeted workshops.
